STANDARD CONSISTENCY TEST OF CEMENT
STANDARD CONSISTENCY TEST OF CEMENT
AIM:
To determine the quantity of water required to produce a cement paste of standard consistency.
APPARATUS:
1. Vicat apparatus and plunger
3. Metal tray
STANDARD CONSISTENCY:
The standard consistency of the cement paste is defined that consistency, which will permit the Vicat plunger to penetrate to a point 5 to 7mm from the bottom of the Vicat mould when the cement paste is tested.
SAMPLE:
The cement taken should be finely ground material which of addition of requisite quantity of water is capable of hardening both under water and in air by the chemical interaction of its constituents with water and capable of binding together the appropriate materials. (Reference IS: 3535 - 1986)
PROCEDURE:
1. Take 500g of cement and prepare a paste with water (24% by weight of the cement) for first trial.
2. The paste must be filled in to Vicat mould within 3 to 5 minutes of mixing them
3. The gauging time shall be counted from the time of adding water to the dry cement until commencing to fill mould
4. Fill the Vicat mould with cement paste and the mould should be resting upon a non-porous material (Test block).
5. The top of the mould should be levelled and made as smooth surface. The mould may be slightly shaken to expel the air
6. Place the Test block in the mould together with the non-porous resting plate under the rod bearing plunger
7. The plunger is attached and brought down to touch the surface of the paste and quickly released allowing it to sink into the paste by its own weight.
8. Take the reading by noting the depth of penetration of plunger.
9. Conduct a second trail with 25% (by weight of cement) of water.
10. Similarly conduct the trail with higher W/C ratio till such time the plunger penetration up to 33-35mm from the top of the Vicat mould.
OBSERVATION:
SI.No. Percentage of water Penetration in mm
1 Trail 1
2 Trail 2
3 Trail 3
